Ryan and Megan's Albuquerque (and the Southwest) Itinerary
Thursday, February 14, 2008 - Monday, February 18, 2008
Howdy, folks! Well, here we are in the middle of winter,
and it's getting pretty cold on the East Coast. So, Megan and I are headed
out to the desert - New Mexico and Texas, to be exact! Actually, we've had
this trip in the making for at least the past year or two. Ever since the
price of plane tickets went up and the amount of frequent flier rewards went
down, we've had to conserve our freebie trips for something worthwhile. So, with
one of our flights due to expire in March, that brings us to President's Day weekend.
Unfortunately, the weather forecasts are not looking too favorable - in fact, we
are looking at wind, snow, and freezing temperatures in Albuquerque as we are landing.
Oh, well! We'll make the best of it. So follow along with us (at least in your head)
as we make our way around the Southwest!
All times are local to
the particular city. Most of the trip will be in the Mountain Time Zone (2
hours behind the East Coast). Only Friday will be spent in the Central Time
Zone, which puts us 1 hour behind Maryland. Actually, for those living out by the Atlantic,
we've added your time in [brackets] so you don't need to do any basic math!

New! We will be bringing a webcam along with us for the ride. Whenever we get signal, we will
try to pump new images to this page every 20 seconds - no need to open a new window or refresh!
If the picture doesn't update, then we are out of signal. Just check back later.

Thursday, February 14:
Happy Valentine's Day! Half the day today will be spent working, the other half trying to make it out to the southwest. Ryan has a meeting at work until 12:00pm, and then he has to somehow make it out to Columbia, then to BWI airport, all in the span of about an hour or a little more. Assuming all goes according to plan, we will be landing around rush hour in the middle of a snowstorm . From there, it's off to Roswell for a good night's sleep with the aliens.
Friday, February 15:
Hopefully we got a good night's sleep because that will be our last chance for 8+ hours for the rest of the trip. Our first stop will be to the UFO Museum , which opens around 9:00am, and seems extremely corny, but hey, when in Rome... From there, it's off to Carlsbad Caverns . According to early weather reports, the temperature should drop from 73 degrees on Thursday to 30 on Friday with snow. It's a good thing we will be underground. From there, we keep heading south into Texas and the Guadalupe Mountains National Park . Eventually, we will make our way down to Alpine for our night at Holland Hotel , a place right next to train tracks with no front desk and unlocked rooms.
Saturday, February 16:
Assuming we survived another night in the cold Southwest, we will spend all day at Big Bend
National Park [7 & 8]. This is a place that usually sees temperatures in the 60s and 70s at
this time of year. For us, we will be lucky to cross the 40-degree mark. Bummer. Once we've
had enough, we will head along the Mexico border to El Paso, where we'll grab a bite to eat.
After a long day, we will get to our hotel in Alamogordo sometime after midnight.
Sunday, February 17:
Will the sun finally shine again? It should today! Our first stop is to White Sands National Park , hopefully avoiding any radiation from the atomic bomb tests several decades ago. From there, we'll be off to the middle of nowhere to see a Very Large Array . Google it yourself. Eventually, we will make our way back up through Albuquerque and to the city of Santa Fe for some dinner and R&R.
Monday, February 18:
Happy President's Day! Today is mostly a freebie for us. We'll catch up on anything that we majorly missed out on in central New Mexico, or otherwise slowly make our way down the Turquoise Trail to Albuquerque for our flight home . It's a long way back with a plane change in Dallas and a stopover in St. Louis, but Ryan has been very much looking forward to landing at Dallas Love, the home airport for Southwest Airlines!
