Ryan, Megan, and Alex's Arizona Itinerary
Saturday, November 9, 2013 - Tuesday, November 12, 2013

Howdy! It's been six years since we last flew into Phoenix, and in looking through the itinerary for that trip, I just became exhausted. How in the world did we do all of that driving and sightseeing in such a short amount of time? We're driving half the distance this time around, plus we're adding an extra day, and I'm still struggling with just planning this trip. We're getting old! Anyhow, the main reason we're coming to Arizona is to see Meteor Crater. It was formed a mere 50,000 years ago and is a great place to see the impact of a space rock slamming into the earth. Somehow we came within a few miles of it on our last major Arizona trip, and we bypassed it without knowing it. I've regretted that mistake for years, so now we finally have a chance to make it right. We have a lot of other things planned for the trip, too, but that's what's driving us to Arizona, instead of say, Florida. We actually had booked a full itinerary to the sunshine state for this same weekend, and we decided to pick the trip based on the weather. In Arizona, we're looking at sunny skies with highs in the lower 80s. Florida is getting rain every day. Plus, we've already flown into Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, and Tampa Bay on separate trips just this year... and we don't want Alex getting spoiled! Of course not! So, instead, we're using our free flights to travel to the other side of the country and stay in luxery hotels at the government rate. That's better!

Today starts off with a very early flight from Baltimore. We had an interesting time checking in because the Southwest computer didn't understand why we were flying from Baltimore to Phoenix and then from Baltimore to Fort Lauderdale later in the day. Once we got that straightened out, we were on our way (I'm writing this on the plane, which is why this is about to switch from past to future tense...). Once we get to Phoenix [1], our first stop is the Arizona State Capitol Museum [2], just after noon local time. After that, we may or may not visit the Phoenix Art Museum [3]. If things go well, Alex will take a nap in his stroller as we tour the museum. More likely, he will be a mess from missing his nap, and we'll just start our drive south to Tucson. By that point it will be getting dark, so we'll check into our hotel [4] for the night.

Good morning! If we get a nice early start today, we'll catch the 9am mass at Most Holy Trinity - it's much better than the Plain-Old Holy Trinity, and certainly moreso than the Lesser Holy Trinity. After that, it's off to the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum [6] to see what it's like to live in the desert. I'm guessing it's pretty hot. From there, we'll swing by Saguaro National Park [7] before leaving Tucson. By the afternoon, we'll be at Casa Grande Ruins National Monument [8]. As the sun starts to set, we'll visit the Desert Botanical Garden [9], back in Phoenix. The day will just about be over by now, so we'll get to our hotel [10] by dark.

Today will be a lot of driving! We'll try to get an early start and drive almost 4 hours up to Winslow [11]. we've been standin' on a corner in Winslow, Arizona before, but this time Alex will be joining us. From there, it's off to my own highlight of the trip - a random dip in the ground called Meteor Crater [12]. If time is on our side, we'll have a chance to hike around the crater a bit before making our way West towards Flagstaff. From there, we have a bunch of national parks and monuments to visit until the sun sets: Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument [13], Walnut Canyon National Monument [14], Oak Creek Canyon [15], Tuzigoot National Monument [16], and Montezuma Castle National Monument [17]. This trek involves over 8 hours of driving, and given that daylight is at a premium, we probably won't get to most of those parks, so we'll see how the day goes. In any event, we're back in Phoenix for the evening [18].

Well, this can't be a real trip unless we visit a graveyard [19], right? So, after spending some time with dead people, it's off to the Musical Instrument Museum [20]. It sounds kind of kooky to me, too, but supposedly it's a can't-miss thing in Phoenix. After that, we'll stop by Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin [21] before heading to the airport [22] in the early afternoon for our long flight home. Whew!

Where you at?? We are never 100% on time to our destinations, so we've taken all the guesswork out of figuring out where we are by broadcasting our GPS location.
