Ryan and Megan's Australia Itinerary
Friday, July 11, 2003 - Saturday, December 6, 2003

G'day mate!
If you are wondering why you haven't seen me in a while, it's because I'm "relaxing" in school on the other side of the planet - in Perth, Australia to be exact.  I'll be studying down under at Murdoch University until December 2003.  I will try to keep this site as current as possible, so check back again for the latest updates!
~ Ryan

*Note to my devoted friends, family, and stalkers who have been itching for an update to this page*
Okay, I lied.  Time for more disappointment.  I didn't update my journal or all of my pictures.  Tough luck - things have been so friggin stressful over the past couple weeks (and especially the past couple days).  In case you didn't know, I had to take a trip to the emergency room of the hospital on Saturday, which put a major damper and delay on things.  First time I've been in a hospital since the day I was born, though!  I've been able to do so many things for the first time here in Australia and that's one of them.  Oh, right.. everything is basically fine.  I just had/have some eye trauma, and Megan convinced me to go to the hospital for treatment.  But anyways, now I have less than 24 hours to vacate my flat.  Plus, I need to figure out what to do with our rented TV and microwave that should have been picked up today - another major headache!  But yeah, things have been crazy around here.  Thus, I've only posted my interary and added pictures from our Perth Zoo trip.  Enjoy them!  For those who really want to pry into my life, I've even put together my semester schedule for next year at UMBC.  I might not be able to do a journal or add more pictures (even though I've been working on narrowing them down and creating captions).  But, that just means that I get to show you them in person when I get home!  Hooray!  See you soon!

If you have always wanted to have that one thing from Australia, now is your chance.  So long as its not illegal, I'll be happy to bring back just about whatever you want from the land down under.  Just let me know before Thanksgiving what you want (see contact information below).

Time Zone Difference:
For those of you living on the east coast of the United States, it is easy to figure out my current time.  Perth, Australia is 12 hours ahead of EST, meaning that you just need to take your current time and swap AM and PM, and add a day if it is after noon.  However, like Arizona, Western Australia does not observe daylight saving time, so after October 26, I will be 13 hours ahead you guys (swap AM/PM, and add an hour).  It's kind of confusing, but check out this web site for more information.  It's really an interesting read.

I use WUnderground each day to figure out the latest forecast for Perth.  It's quite accurate, and it's even user-friendly for those who despise the metric system!

Although I have my webcam with me, I won't have it on too much (as we have to pay for the internet per megabyte), but you can still check out live shots of Murdoch University through their internet-controllable webcam, which is located here:

Contact Information:
The best way of getting in touch with me is electronically via e-mail or instant messaging.  It is the fastest and cheapest way!  Here is that information:
     AOL AIM: Ryan0282

Otherwise, here are my alternative contact methods (remember that Western Australia is the state that I live in and Australia is the country - you need to include both):
    Mailing Address:
     Ryan Kennedy
Flat 3, Room 3, Student Village
     Murdoch University
     PO BOX 1055
Canning Vale DC, Western Australia 6970

Mobile Phone Number: (Actually, this is Megan's mobile number)
     011 - 61 - 4 - 2152 - 8813

Flat Phone Number: (Used by ALL 7 of my flatmates - please use as a last resort)
     011 - 61 - 9360 - 2003

A note on calling:  International calls are expensive, and unless you have an international phone plan or calling cards, you will rack up a fairly large bill.  10-10-220 is a great alternative, as calls are only 31 cents per minute.  Thus, to call Megan's mobile, just dial 10-10-220-011-61-4-2152-8813.

Mailing Stuff:
Sending a "care" package to me in Australia is actually more trouble than it's worth.  Firstly, sending things to other countries (let alone the other side of the world) is costly.  A five-pound package will cost over $20 to send through the postal service (FedEx and UPS are considerably more).  Secondly, it will take almost six weeks for the package to arrive, unless you spend about double the original ground price for expedited service.  Thirdly, and most importantly, Australia is very strict on what is allowed in and out of the country (i.e., popcorn is bad).  See Australia's customs web site for a complete list of what is and is not allowed.
Letters generally take a little over a week to be sent via airmail, and a one-ounce letter costs about .80 cents to send.  See the USPS web site for more pricing information.
Lastly, keep in mind, that e-mail is free (, and I will only be gone for about five months.

Return Date:
Although classes end on November 28th (yes, after Thanksgiving), I will not be back in Maryland until Saturday, December 6th, as I plan to take some time to chill out in Southern California.  For those who are interested, I will be posting my flight itinerary and tracking information shortly before my travels (around Thanksgiving).
