Ryan and Megan's Colorado Itinerary
Thursday, June 30, 2011 - Monday, July 4, 2011

Howdy, folks! Do you know when we last took a trip? Me, neither - it's been way too long! Even through a pint-sized replica of Megan and I put a halt to some of our regular site-seeting tours, we figured that it's time to get back on the road and have Mr. Alex join us for some new adventures. So that brings us to Colorado. Yeah, we've flown into Denver before; in fact, we last visited exactly five years ago - to date - we flew in on June 30 and left on July 4. And what changes come about in five short years! Megan and I weren't even married back then. The last time we were here, we drove up to North Dakota - a trip that lasted over 2,000 miles. To keep our sanity in tact, we won't be doing that again. But, we will still be on the road for somewhere between 1,300-1,400 miles... with a baby that doesn't like car seats. ::sigh:: So much for keeping our sanity in tact! One way or another, this will be a trip unlike any other... so let's go!

Thursday, June 30

There's not much to say about today. We're going to work as usual and taking a nighttime flight to Denver [1]. We should be getting to our hotel [2] sometime after midnight.

Friday, July 1

OK - It's time for a lot of driving! Let's hope Mr. Alex learns to like his car seat! We'll start off aroun 8am and drive to Columbine High School [3], where there is a memorial to the massacre from 1999. Can you believe it was that long ago? If we have time, we might swing by the US Mint, but tours are by reservation only, and when we booked this trip several months ago, it was already full. From there, we'll grab some early morning beer at the Coors Brewing Company [4]. After that, we'll get high at Mt. Evans [5] - home to the Highest Paved Road in North America. We'll continue down I-70 to Breckenridge, but we won't stay long because we've been there before. Then, it's on to new places, like Vail [7] and Glenwood Springs [8]. All of this will take us through the Rocky Mountains, so even though the distance isn't too far, the time to get there is. We'll get to our hotel [9] sometime around midnight - but that all depends on Alex. This trip, we've built in a 30 minute break for every hour of driving!

Saturday, July 2

We've got a lot of driving planned today! We'll start off heading towards Aspen [10]. It's not on the way towards anything, but we haven't been there before, so now we can say we have. From there, we'll start heading south to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park [11]. We'll spend a couple hours there, and then start driving towards the Four Corners area. If it's not getting too late, we'll check out Red Mountain Pass [12] and Telluride [13]. After that, we'll drive through the San Juan National Forest in the evening and arrive at our hotel [14], hopefully before midnight!

Sunday, July 3

Today will be interesting... (and partly because I'm typing this up during the trip, as opposed to ahead of time)... Mr. Alex had a fever last night (a little above 101), so he might end up dictating how today goes. Nevertheless, we should be starting the day by checking out Mesa Verde [15]. Given how close we've been to this location on 2 other trips, I'm not sure how we "missed" this. We won't be able to do any guided tours since they require going up ladders and Alex is too young for a backpack holder. After that, we'll head towards the town of Durango [16] before taking a long drive out to Great Sand Dunes National Park [17]. However, I doubt we'll be able to do any kind of hiking. From there, we take our turn north towards Denver, stopping in Colorado Springs to check out the Broadmoor Hotel [18]. We can't afford their price tag, so we'll spend the night at the Hyatt [19]. What?? What are we doing at a Hyatt? Actually, this is a point of nostalgia because we stayed in this very hotel on our last trip to Colorado - exactly 5 years to the date. Back then, it was Bradford Home Suites. This time, we'll use my government ID to get a discounted rate. :-)

Monday, July 4

We'll post more later!

We are never 100% on time to our destinations, so we've taken all the guesswork out of figuring out where we are by broadcasting our GPS location, courtesy of Per their rules, you'll need to manually refresh this page to see our latest movements, but so long as we get cell phone signal, you'll be able to see where we are!

And if that's not good enough, we've still got our guesimated route highlighted below...
