Megan & Ryan's Denver to Albuquerque Itinerary
Thursday, October 4, 2012 - Monday, October 8, 2012
Howdy! Well, this trip was a later-than-normal booking for us. Originally, we booked a flight for this weekend back in March to go up to Albany to check out the fall foliage. But about a month ago, we discovered that this is the first weekend of the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta - something I've wanted to experience for years. Of course, the flights into Albuquerque were way too expensive, but Southwest happened to have a really good deal to an airport a few hours away (well, 6-7 hours, actually): Denver. After some consideration, we decided to go ahead with it. After all, there's only so much time that Alex gets to fly free before we check him as luggage!
All times are local to the particular city. This trip will be primarily in the Mountain time zone, except for part of the day Sunday.

(will be checked as often as possible)
Once again, we will be bringing a webcam along with us for the ride. (Although, we have been having internet issues lately.) Whenever we can, we will try to pump new images to this page every 20 seconds - no need to open a new window or refresh!
If the picture doesn't update, then we have the webcam off. Just check back later.

Thursday, October 4
Today starts with a morning flight to Denver . We aren't sure if Alex will do better with a morning or evening flight, so let's hope he's good with either! Once we get our car, we drive straight into downtown, near the state capitol . We can't linger long because we have a 1pm reservation to take a tour of the Denver Mint . They won't even let us bring a cell phone inside, let alone a camera, so you'll have to imagine what a bunch of coins look like. Or you can just check your pocket. And that's basically it for activities today. We have a very long drive to New Mexico, likely stopping along the way to give Alex a break. We should be at our hotel after sunset.
Friday, October 5
This will be the most relaxing day of our trip. We probably won't leave our hotel until after 10:30 (we need some rest after a long day yesterday). From there, we'll slowly make our way south, passing through Bandelier National Monument and Santa Fe . We'll grab some dinner , possibly in the Santa Fe area, and then we'll get to Albuquerque around sunset - which is just in time to take the Sandia Peak Aerial Tramway into the mountains. We'll check into our hotel immediately thereafter, as we have a very early morning tomorrow.
Saturday, October 6
Balloon Fiesta! We need to leave our hotel by 4:30 in the morning to get to the park well before sunrise. We'll get to watch some early morning balloons taking off, glowing against the dark sky. We'll stick around for the morning session, leaving sometime in the early afternoon. From there, we'll swing by Petroglyph National Monument and meander around the rest of the city . We'll head back north to Pecos National Historic Park and then backtrack slightly to catch the 5:15 mass at St. Francis Cathedral in Santa Fe. After that, we are off to Vegas! Well, Las Vegas, New Mexico, that is. I was considering getting more Marriott rewards, but I couldn't resist staying in the #1 Super 8 in the USA (#3 in the world)! Let's hope it can live up to the high Super 8 expectations.
Sunday, October 7
Today is a lot of driving. And it's really for no other reason than to add more states to Alex's been-there list. First, we'll stop by Fort Union National Monument in the morning, followed by Capulin Volcano National Monument . Assuming it doesn't erupt, we'll get ourselves over to the nearest state lines: New Mexico , Texas , Oklahoma , Colorado , and Kansas . After driving through the plains, we'll head to our hotel in Pueblo .
Monday, October 8
It's our last day, so we are taking full advantage! If we can get up early enough, we'll get over to Pikes Peak in the morning. Pikes Peak has been on our itinerary for every visit to the Denver area, and we've never had time to do it. Will this be the time?? After that, we'll head up to Denver, grab some dinner , and board our evening flight , getting back to our house just after midnight! And work starts bright and early the next day!
Where you at?? We are never 100% on time to our destinations, so we've taken all the guesswork out of figuring out where we are by broadcasting our GPS location, courtesy of InstaMapper.com. Per their rules, you'll need to manually refresh this page to see our latest movements, but so long as we get cell phone signal, you'll be able to see where we are!
But first, this is our guesstimated route...
And this is our current location...
