Ryan and Megan's Idaho Itinerary
Thursday, September 1, 2011 - Wednesday September 7, 2011

Howdy, folks! Once again, we waited until the last minute to write up this online iternary, but this time around, we planned the trip pretty far in advance. This is the last "official" free reward ticket we are using on Southwest. They changed their program from credits to cash-like points, so the likelihood of flying for free in the future is significantly lower. So, what crazy place are we going to take our free trip? Idaho! We haven't been to the southern area of the state, so this is our chance to check it out. We were going to fly into Boise, but there are no direct flights there. Taking a 6-month old anywhere isn't very easy, so the fewer the stops, the better.

We'll be pumping images to this site whenever we can, but if the camera appears frozed for a while, it's likely that we just ran out of cell reception. There be mountains out there!

After a rushed morning, we are taking a 10am flight out to SLC [1]. We won't be arriving until the afternoon, so today will be fairly laid back. Our first stop is to the world's biggest hole [2]. Seriously. It's the Bingham Canyon Copper Mine, and it's the largest man-made hole in the world! Since today's a working day, we probably won't be able to get too close. From there, it's off to Snowbird[3]. From there, and depending on driving conditions, we'll check out Spiral Jetty. It's a big spiral that some guy created in the Great Salt Lake. Unfortunately, lake levels vary, so it might be underwater when we see it, and driving to it requires a lot of off-road stuff (Megan's favorite!). Then, we'll go to the Golden Spike National Historic Site, where the last railroad spike was laid in a cross-country connection scheme many years ago. You'd recognize the picture if you saw it. In the evening, we'll settle at our hotel [6] in Logan.

Today is one of the longest days of driving, so get ready! Hopefully we made it to our hotel early so we can leave by 7am. Our first stop is City of Rocks [7], followed by the Minidoka National Historic Site [8] - just Google them. From there, we'll drive to Shoshone Falls [9] - taller than the famous falls in New York! We'll spend a few minutes at the Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument [10] before potentially checking out Brumeau Dunes State Park [11]. After a long day of Alex crying in the car, we'll go to our hotel - Oxford Suites [12] in beautiful Boise.

Saturday, September 3

There isn't too much to do in Boise, but we'll go to the Basque Museum [13] and the World Center for Birds of Prey [15]. At least, these are supposedly two of a thousand things we need to do before we die. If time allows, we'll hop the fence into Oregon [14]. We've already been to all 50 states, but now we've got to do the same for Alex before he's old enough to even remember doing it! Then it's off to Stanley[16] and Sawtooth National Recreation Area[17]. We'll spend the night at a price-inflated, sub-par Best Western hotel [18].

Sunday, September 4

What a better way to start the day than at Ernest Hemingway's grave site [19]! After that, we'll spend the day exploring central Idaho, particularly Sun Valley [20], Land of the Yankee Fork Historical Area [21] Craters of the Moon [22], and the world's first nuclear power plant [23]! By now, it's getting late in the day on a Sunday, so the Idaho World Potato Exposition may not be an option [24], so we'll just go to our hotel [25].

Monday, September 5

Happy birthday, Megan! To celebrate, we'll go to Bear Lake State Park [26] and Fossil Butte National Monument [27]. Plus, a whole lot of driving! Yay! Our hotel will be just outside of a ritzy ski resort town [28].

Tuesday, September 6

Our first stop today is at the Utah Olympic Park [29] - site of prior winter olympics and several X-Game competitions. From there, we'll go to Park City [30] and the Sundance Resort [31]. If we feel up to it, we'll go to Timpanogos Cave National Monument [32], followed by Alta [33]. Our hotel [34] is in downtown Salt Lake City, near a Bucca De Beppo!

There isn't a whole lot of time today, so we'll stick to the city limits and Temple Square [35]. If we don't convert, and if Ryan doesn't pick up a couple more wives, we'll be back to the airport [36] before noon! Thanks for tracking us!
