Ryan and Megan's Midwest III Itinerary
Friday, February 29, 2008 - Sunday, March 2, 2008
Howdy, folks! We are headed back to the middle of the country!
I, for one, love this area. Perhaps just because there is nothing there. When
you spend over three hours every weekday sitting in traffic with buildings and billboards
and stuff everywhere, it is incredibly relaxing to just look around and see a bunch of
nothingness. It would probably be pretty bad to have to live out here, but for a quick
weekend trip, it's totally worth it. When we first came out here, we explored most of Kansas and
northern Oklahoma. The second time around, we went through Tennessee and Arkansas (not really the
Midwest, but close enough). Now, we are headed a bit further north to see more of Iowa and Missouri.
Plus, Kelly is coming along with Megan and me this time around, so let the good times roll!
All times are local to
the particular city. All of this trip will be in the Central Time Zone (1
hour behind the East Coast). For those living out by the Atlantic,
we've added your time in [brackets] so you don't need to do any math!
Emergency Contact Information:
Phone (Ryan's Cell):
Phone (Megan's Cell):
(will be checked as often as possible)
For the second straight trip, we will be bringing a webcam along with us for the ride. Whenever we get signal, we will
try to pump new images to this page every 20 seconds - no need to open a new window or refresh!
If the picture doesn't update, then we are out of signal. Just check back later.
3/2 UPDATE: We seem to have overloaded our rental car because the cigarette lighters no longer work. Therefore, without power, Megan's laptop won't last very long and we won't be able to upload images. We just wanted to let you know that is why the picture may not change today. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Friday, February 29:
Happy Leap Day! Unfortunately, this is a working day for all of us, and we aren't taking any time off for
this trip. The goal here is to leave work on time, and fly into Kansas City during the night.
From there, it's a drive of a little over an hour to the small town of Cameron to
spend a very short night.
Saturday, March 1:
This will be a tough day. If we have any chance of doing everything on our list, we have to leave
the hotel while it's still dark. From the hotel, we have a long drive to a small
town in southwest Iowa . It's here that we hope to pose in front of a small farm
house, used in the painting American Gothic. Do your own research on that one.
Yes, we really are blowing half the day just to pose like a couple farmers.
From there, we head west towards Des Moines to check out the real-life
bridges of Madison County . After a quick stop for food, it's off to Omaha,
Nebraska! If we can make it there by early afternoon, we could stop by the
Henry Doorly Zoo (if that's an option in the winter...) and maybe at least
drive by the home for Omaha Steaks . After all is said and done, we head
south to Kansas to spend the night in the state capitol for a good night's sleep.
Sunday, March 2:
Can you believe it's already time to go home? But not before we go to the Wizard of Oz museum . From
there, we head off to Tallgrass National Prarie Preseve . Seriously. We meant to go here when
we took our first trip to Kansas, but we took a wrong turn and ended up in Oklahoma. There won't
be much tall grass in the middle of winter, but at least we'll have made it - albiet 3 years late.
From there, we head back to the big city to see the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum before
getting dinner in Kansas City and flying home.
Don't have time to read
all my nonsense? I don't blame you. Just check out the map
below to see our guesstimated route.
