Ryan, Megan, and Alex's Minnesota Itinerary
Saturday, May 11, 2013 - Tuesday, May 14, 2013

Howdy! It's been two full weeks since going on a trip, so I guess that means it's time for another! This time around, we're headed to the upper midwest in search of states 43 and 44 on Alex's made-up bucket list. Plus, we'll be stopping through a couple places we've never been before (imagine that!) and following a baseball team that's currently tied for most wins so far this season! All that, plus we're back to our old ways of driving well over 1,000 miles in essentially 3 days. And off we go!

Today, we start off with a long flight to Minneapolis [1], as there are still no nonstop flights from BWI. We'll swing through St. Louis to grab some lunch before heading up north. We should be on the road by around 1:45pm, most likely just driving around the city so Alex can take a nap. Or, if he's wide awake, we'll check out the Institute of Arts [2] and the Sculpture Gardens. By 5pm, we'll make our way to Target Field [3] to catch a game between the Orioles and Twins. It's gonna be wicked cold, feeling like the low 30's with the wind chill. Fortunately, we were able to score seats in the club level, so if things get too chilly, we can head indoors. Otherwise, our seats are in the fruthermost corner down the first base side (Legacy Club, Section A, Row 1, Seats 1 and 2). From there (9pm-ish), we'll make our way to our hotel [4], just south of the city.

Today is the first day of long-distance driving. After stopping by church [5] at 9am, we'll make our way to the Spam Museum [6] around the time they open at noon. We can only hope they have free samples! After that, it's time to head into Iowa for the rest of the day. The first stop is a random farm [7] that's always been too far away to get to on any prior trips. This is the spot where "the music died" - the plane crash site of the talented Buddy Holly and several others. There's a small memorial set up there to honor their legacy. After that, and depending on timing, we might head into Des Moines to check out the state capitol [8] and grab dinner [9]. In any case, the current plans are to get to Sioux City [10] by the evening.

While everyone else heads back to work, we'll be making a long drive through Nebraska [11], South Dakota [12] and North Dakota today - the first two of which will be Alex's 43rd and 44th states. Our first "real" stop of the day is Falls Park [13] - the namesake of Sioux Falls, SD. We might grab lunch there and then head back into Minnesota for a short time to see Pipestone National Monument [14]. We should cross the state line of North and South Dakota [15, 16] by the evening. We'll make our way into Fargo [17] for dinner and watch as the Red River continues to recede from flood stage. I think it will be well past 5pm by this point, but if for some reason its not, we'll go to the Fargo Air Museum [18]. Our hotel [19] for the night is just over the state line, in Minnesota.

Nothing much to do today except head home. I think we'll be too tired to drive much today, but if we can get an early (7am) start, we'll go to Lake Itasca [20], the headwaters for the Mississippi River. After that, it's a long drive back to MSP [21] for our late afternoon flight home.

Where you at?? We are never 100% on time to our destinations, so we've taken all the guesswork out of figuring out where we are by broadcasting our GPS location. You'll need to manually refresh this page to see our latest movements, but so long as we get cell phone signal, you'll be able to see where we are!
