Ryan and Megan's NorthWest II Itinerary
Tuesday, August 26, 2008 - Monday, September 1, 2008
Howdy, folks! Well, a few years after having a wonderful
time in the Pacific NorthWest, we are headed out there again. This time, though,
we'll be headed a little bit fruther north to visit our Canadian neighbors! We've known
about this trip for a while. In fact, we know all of the trips we'll be taking in the next
year or two: there's Florida sometime in February of 2009, there's Alaska sometime around
September of 2009, and so on. This NorthWest II trip has been in our plans for about
a year, but we just started booking stuff - um - a few days before we were scheduled to leave.
In fact, although we booked the flight many months ago, we just changed the departure date
about a week before we left, as well. We figured that with the rising cost of everything, not
to mention our new house, we should take full advantage of free plane tickets - so we are taking
almost a full week to explore the countryside. What will we be doing? Check it out below!
All times are local to
the particular city. Starting off, we will be in the Pacific Time zone, which
is 3 hours behind Eastern Time. In Montana and Alberta, we'll be 2 hours behind.
Emergency Contact Information:
Phone (Ryan's Cell):
Phone (Megan's Cell):
Note: In Canada, rates are .69/min for us, and text/pic messages are .05 to recieve, .50 to send.
(will be checked as often as possible)
Once again, we will be bringing a webcam along with us for the ride. Signal will be rare, especially
in the mountains and Canada, but whenever we can, we will try to pump new images to this page
every 20 seconds - no need to open a new window or refresh!
If the picture doesn't update, then we are out of signal. Just check back later.

Tuesday, August 26:
The plan for the first part of the day is wrapping up packing and last-minute trip planning. Then it's off to bed (hopefully). After only a few hours of sleep, it'll be off to work to somehow get through the day before being chauffeured (yeah, that's right!) to the airport. Sometime after midnight back home, we'll land in Seattle and spend the night within walking distance of the airport .
Wednesday, August 27:
Hopefully we'll get a nice early start to the day because this will be our longest day of driving. We'll cross the entire state of Washington, heading East. Our first stop is along the highway to check out a fancy place called Salish Lodge. Then it's off to the towns of Leavenworth and Spokane . From there, it's more eastward driving to the Coeur d'Alene City Park and the Sierra Silver Mine , although I'm pretty sure it will be closed by the time we get out there. We'll get to Flathead Lake in the dark, and from there, it's just a short drive to our hotel in Whitefish .
Thursday, August 28:
After checking out of the hotel, we might check out the Big Mountain Ski Resort, but upon finding little to no snow, we'll start our journey through Glacier National Park in northern Montana. From there, we'll hop the border to Canada to check out their version of the national park - Waterton Lakes . After some mountain hiking, it will be off to the Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump Interpretive Centre (I didn't name that one). Even fruther north is the Calgary Exhibition Stampede, which just so happens to be pretty close to our next hotel for the night .
Friday, August 29:
Good morning, Canada! Today, we are headed back west through Bow Valley to Lake Louise in the heart of Baniff National Park . We'll travel a mountain highway up to the entrance of Jasper National Park , but since there's no easy way out (unless we want to add another 300 miles to the trip), we'll turn around once it starts getting late and head back to Baniff. Still heading West, it's off to Yoho National Park (again, I didn't name it), through Golden, British Columbia, and to our hotel in Revelstoke .
Saturday, August 30:
Our hotel is just at the base of Mount Revelstoke , so we might have to just check that out in the early morning. But otherwise, most of today will be spent driving through British Columbia, Canada until we get to Vancouver. We'll probably arrive in the mid-afternoon, but our plans from there are a bit scattered. There's quite a bit to do in this city, but our main points of interest could be: the Granville Island Public Market, the Museum of Anthropology, the Chan Shun Concert Hall, Stanley Park, Andy Livingstone Park, the Wedgewood Hotel, or dinner at Tojo's. In any event, we'll end up in a Hilton hotel for the night . Yeah, that's right - a Hilton! We be gettin' fancy now!
Sunday, August 31:
Today we are headed back in the US - back in the US - back in the US of A! Our first stop is just across the border to the Inna at Semiahmoo. From there, it's off to the Heather Meadows Visitor Center near Mount Baker. Then its a trip a little fruther South to North Cascades National Park . We'll probably spend some time hiking and dealing with Labor Day weekend traffic, so our only other stops include La conner and Whidbey Island as we make our way to Lynnwood for the night.
Monday, September 1:
Exhausted, yet? We are! So we are sleeping in a little bit, grabbing some coffee in Seattle (or at least Megan is), and then catching a late-morning flight back home, through Denver. And that's all folks! Happy Labor Day!
