Ryan, Megan, Alex, and Katie's Northwest IV Itinerary
Thursday, July 3, 2014 - Tuesday, July 8, 2014

Howdy! Well, we made it through a 4-month hiatus from major trips since Katie was born, so it's about time we get back in the air! This time around, we're headed out to Portland and Seattle for the Fourth of July weekend, using some of the remaining points we've built up over the years. This trip should take us 5-6 hours in the air and over 1,200 miles on the ground. Will Katie make it longer than 15 minutes without crying? Will Alex wake up at 3am due to the time difference? Will Mommy and Daddy get through the trip without adding any more gray hair? There's only one way to find out - let's go!

Note: The numbers in the itinerary correspond to the map at the bottom. For context, this section was written by Ryan.

Please note that times are ESTIMATES only to give you an idea of what our original plans were. We get distracted and detoured easily, so just check the webcam and/or GPS tracker to get an idea of where we really are.

Thursday, July 3
Today starts off somewhat routine. We wake up around the same time we do for work before making our way to the airport to board our 9:45am non-stop flight out to the west coast. We should be on the road around 2:00pm, local time. Officially, we don't have any hotels booked for tonight because our itinerary changed pretty late in the game. Most likely, we'll spend most of the afternoon in the Portland area, allowing Alex to run off some energy after sitting on an airplane for six hours. One option is to stop by the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. We'll grab some dinner in town (Applebees???), and once it starts getting later in the day, we'll make our way north. Most likely, we'll spend the night in the Seattle area - probably at a Marriott just east of the city.

Friday, July 4
Happy Independence Day! Depending on what time everyone wakes up, our first stop will likely be the Museum of Glass in Tacoma. It's been recommended to us in the past, and this is the first time we'll actually go to it. After that, we'll make our way to the Tacoma Dome, where we can pick up a shuttle bus that will take us over to the riverfront for some 4th of July activities. We plan to spend most of the day here, but we won't be able to stick around for fireworks. After all, it's not dark enough until 10:30 at night, which is 1:30am, back home. Instead, we'll drive north to Bremerton to spend the night. The hotel is a few blocks away from the water, where a different fireworks show is expected. So, if Alex is still awake, we might make our way over there, but otherwise, it's time for bed!

Saturday, July 5
Today is where things get a little unknown. If Katie was good enough in the car so far, the plan is to drive to Olympic National Park and Hurricane Ridge. We'll make our way completely around the mountain range, which will take the entire day. If we go this route, and stop only for a couple hours, we won't make it to our hotel until midnight. It's a LOT of driving! Wait - did I really just say that? I must be getting too old for this... Otherwise, Plan B is to stick around the Seattle area and visit some of the free museums that are provided by Bank of America on the first weekend of each month. Either way, we'll likely spend the night back in Tacoma.

Sunday, July 6
Assuming things go to plan, we will spend part of the morning in Seattle, perhaps visiting the Seattle Art Museum and Bellevue Art Museum. From there, we'll go to the town of Leavenworth, Washington. Megan and I were there many years ago, and it was a pretty cool area. Once it gets later, and the kids are ready to sleep, we'll start our long drive back down to Oregon - this time, on a more eastern route that will allow us to spend the night in a brand-new Fairfield Inn at the Dalles.

Monday, July 8
This is another day without a firm plan. Most likely, we'll make a leisurely drive around the Columbia River Gorge towards Portland. If we get there early enough, we may even rent a boat to putter around the river for the afternoon. If not, we'll go to the Portland Children's Museum and International Rose Test Garden - 'cause that's what you are supposed to do in Portland. We'll get dinner in town (Applebees, again???), and then spend the night by the river.

Tuesday, July 9
Nothing much planned for today. Maybe we can sleep in a bit before heading to the airport for an early afternoon, non-stop ride back to BWI. And that's all, folks!

Where you at?? We are never 100% on time to our destinations, so we've taken all the guesswork out of figuring out where we are by broadcasting our GPS location. You'll need to manually refresh this page to see our latest movements, but so long as we get cell phone signal, you'll be able to see where we are!

And if that's not good enough, we've still got our guesstimated route highlighted below...
