Ryan, Megan, Alex, and Katie's Puerto Rico Itinerary
Saturday, April 18, 2015 - Tuesday, April 21, 2015

Howdy! It's been a while since we've taken a real vacation - a whole 2 months! This time, all of us are going to a place we've never been before... a place further East than we've ever been before... Puerto Rico! No passports needed for this trip to one of the USA's territories, but plenty of insect repellent, from what I've heard! We are pretty excited about this trip, but also slightly nervous since it was a bit more difficult to plan this trip than most. Often, we'll use Google Street View to get an idea of the locations and hotels, but this is one of the few places that Google hasn't taken their stalker-camera! We've also heard some interesting stories about driving around on the island. In fact, when looking up addresses for most of our places-to-go, they just don't exist. So, as long as we don't get lost/mugged/bitten/sunburnt/injured, it should be a grand old time!

Good morning! After a 4+ hour plane ride, we'll finally touch down in the early afternoon in San Juan [1]! We don't have time to just sit around because our first stop is a couple hours away. We'll be heading to the El Portal Rain Forest [2] for most of the afternoon. Temperatures should be hot and muggy the entire trip, so I'm not sure how long we'll actually be hiking in the forest. One of the coolest things to do on this side of the island is visit Laguna Grande Fajardo [3] at night to check out a bunch of bioluminescent microorganisms in the water! It sure sounds awesome, but the best way to get there is on a kayak tour, which isn't going to work well for a 1 and 4 year old. So, unfortunately, we may need to skip this destination altogether and make our way to our hotel [4] for the night.

This will be the busiest day of the trip, spending a bit of time in the car. Our first stop is down south in Ponce. We'll check out an old firehouse called Parque de Bombas [5], followed by Museo de Arte de Ponce [6]. If we have time, we'll spend some time along the shoreline of this cool little town. However, we'll need to try to leave by 1:30 in the afternoon to start heading north. We have a few other stops: Rio Camuy Cave Park [7], Arecibo Observatory [8], and Cueva Ventana [9], which will close long before the sun sets, so depending on how much fun we have in Ponce, we may or may not have time for the rest. We should get to our hotel by around 7pm [10].

We'll likely back-track slightly today to check out the Arecibo Lighthouse Historical Park [11], unless we had time to do that yesterday. From there, it's time to head back to where we started and check out Old San Juan, along with Castillo San Felipe del Morro [12] and Castillo de San Cristobal [13]. If we've made it this far into our trip, we'll end our day a little early at the Ritz Carlton [14]. This is the only Marriott-branded property we're staying at during this trip, and the government rate is the same as any other hotel in the city, so why not?! It's our first time to be puttin' on the Ritz!

It's time to go already? Almost! After getting a late start from our hotel, we'll stop by Casa Bacardi [15], which is exactly what it sounds like. We'll check out what kind of rum the island has to offer before making our way back to the airport [16] to catch our evening flight back home. And that's all, folks!

And if that's not good enough, we've still got our guesstimated route highlighted below...
